Cardamom is a spice which is made from seeds of two plants from the genera Elettaria and Amomum, which are native to India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Bhutan, Nepal and Indonesia. Cardamom seeds have triangular cross-section, spindle shape with a thin papery outer shell and are black in color. There are mainly two types of cardamom- Green Cardamom and Black Cardamom. The Green Cardamom comes from Elettaria and is cultivated in India and Malaysia. The Black Cardamom, also known as Nepal Cardamom, which comes from Amomum species is found in Eastern Himalayas.

Cardamom is known to have a strong aroma and a unique taste, which makes it useful as a flavoring agent in food and beverages. It is also used as a medicine.
