Ferula Assafoetide is commonly known as asafetida. The name is derived from a latin word which means stinking. It has a pungent smell but is can be used in the cooking preparation by combining it with one or two spices. It carries bitter taste and looks grayish-white when it is new and fresh. The plant grows to a height of about 2 metres and one need to wait for 4 years to harvest it. Asafetida is popularly known as asant, food of the gods, jowanibadian, stinking gum, hing, hengu, ingu, kayam, and ting. It is a perennial plant belonging to the family herbaceous. The leaves ranges from 12 to 16 inches and the flowers are 3 metres high and 10 cm thick. The flowers consist of slight green and yellow combination colours. The fruit of Asafetida is oval in shape and has a milky juice in it. It id of two types; while and blackish.

Primary Use of the Herb

It is mainly used for the purpose of digestion especially gastric trouble, indigestion, stomach upset and irritable colon. It is used for curing breathing problems such as Asthma, bronchitis and Swine flu.
