Amla is also commonly known with other names such as emblic, emblicmyrobalan myrobalan, Indian gooseberry and Malacca tree. Amla belongs to the family Phyllanthaeae. It is well known for the edible fruit it produces in the same name. The tree ranges between small and medium size with a height of 1 to 8 m. The leaves are simple, sub sessile and closely grown along branchlets, light green in colour. The flowers carry greenish-yellowcolour. The fruit is spherical in shape with light greenish yellow colour,which is segmented into six parts. Ripening in autumn, amla is harvested by hand. The taste of Amla is sour, bitter and fibrous. In India, it is common to eat amla dipped in salt water and red chili powder to add flavour to the sour taste of the fruit.
